Hamakua-Kohala Health is one of only 18 healthcare groups nationwide to be named 2015 Hypertension Control Champion. Launched in 2011 by Million Hearts and the Center for Disease Control, the Hypertension Control Challenge recognizes outstanding healthcare teams who work together toward the goal of preventing a million heart attacks and strokes in five years.

“The Hypertension Control Challenge (is) to find and celebrate health care professionals and teams across the country who save lives by reducing blood pressure,” said CDC Director Tom Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., who goes on to say, “Every one of these high performers achieved blood pressure control for at least 70% of their adult patients with hypertension and many of our champions serve those in greatest need of health services.”

“Congratulations to our nationally recognized medical providers and staff for giving top quality care to our community,” said HKH CEO Irene Carpenter. “They are dedicated individuals who care about our patients and it shows.”

According to the CDC, nearly a third of American adults have high blood pressure and nearly half of those don’t have their blood pressure under control. Millions go undiagnosed or untreated. Just like all the nearly 1200 Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) nationwide, Hamakua-Kohala Health works to reduce barriers to health care and help patients live a healthy lifestyle.

As a community-based FQHC, HKH provides comprehensive primary and preventative healthcare to persons of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay or health insurance status. Our Care Coordinators are available to help patients receive as many services as they need.

“Clinicians are our first line of defense against the hundreds of thousands of deaths caused by high blood pressure each year,” said Frieden. “We applaud the 2015 Champions and hope other health care teams learn from these successes and save even more lives.”

Since May was American Stroke Month and National High Blood Pressure Education Month, the  Hamakua Health Center hosted our Annual Health Fair and 50th Anniversary Celebration on May 28.
