The need for affordable and accessible dental care for the low-income uninsured and under-insured people of Hawai’i had been discussed by healthcare advocates and social service agencies since the early 1990’s. At that time there was almost no access to dental care for the low-income and Medicaid insured population on the neighbor islands. It wasn’t until a homeless man died in Hilo of complications from a dental infection that resources were allocated for action; community leaders and elected representatives at the county and state level took up the cause. In 1999 the Hawaii Primary Care Association facilitated a fact finding initiative, convening stakeholders from all islands. This paved the way for raising community awareness and eventually for legislative changes. Now dental services are provided in some Community Health Clinics on all the islands in stationary facilities and mobile vans that travel to rural locations.
Hāmākua-Kohala Health received Community Development Block Grant Funding through the Hawaii County Office of Housing and Community Development to purchase a mobile dental van that would serve the communities of Hāmākua and North Kohala. We are excited to provide dental services in both Kohala and Waimea for patients 20 years old and younger. The dental staff includes a dentist, dental assistant and clinic manager. Services include comprehensive dental care, prevention and oral health education.
