October 12, 2024— Hāmākua-Kohala Health to host Sugar Days Festival PARADE

Happening Saturday, October 12th, 2024 in historic Honokaʻa Town.

April 2024— Mahalo and a hui hou Dr. Jude McAnesby!

After nearly a decade of service to our communities of North Hawaii, Hāmākua-Kohala Health bids farewell to Psychologist, Dr. Jude McAnesby. She will be greatly missed but we wish her well in the next chapter of her life. 
 
Our behavioral health department will continue to see patients from keiki to kūpuna offering both in-person and telehealth visits.

August 28th— Hāmākua-Kohala Health receives PCMH Certificate of Recognition.

As a recognized (PCMH) Patient Centered Medical Home, Hāmākua-Kohala Health is able to achieve Recognition for Systematic Use of Patient-Centered, and Coordinated Care Management Processes by providing our patients with quality care and access to services and resources such as transportation, food, shelter, and other social determinants of health. 

Congratulations to our HKH staff in continuing to meet the guidelines and expectations to receive PCMH recognition now going on 9 years!

November 2023— Save-the-date! Breast Cancer Awareness Event

On Friday, November 3rd, 2023 we will be hosting Ladies Night Out, a breast cancer awareness event at the Honokaa Gym Complex from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There will be health screenings available, informational vendors, craft and retail vendors as well as activities including massage, nail painting, and much more! July 2023— Join us this Saturday at Kohala High School for the Kohala Back to School Bash!

The Back to School Bash will be held on Saturday, July 22nd at the Kohala High School from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. It is an admission free event open to all! There will be informational vendors, craft and food vendors available. There will also be face painting, jumping castle, maze and free school supplies for keiki . Our plans are in the making for a new health center in Honokaʻa!

Hāmākua-Kohala Health will be expanding services from our current location on Plumeria Street to an additional location above the Honokaʻa Skatepark.

The new health center will include primary care, behavioral health, dental services, and much more!

Growing Our Own!

Physician Assistant Toni Caravalho started with Hāmākua-Kohala Health in 2013 as a Health Insurance Coordinator helping the Kohala community to get the health care coverage they needed.

Over the years she has also served in our Quality Improvement department gaining the knowledge and experience that would assist her as she continued her journey to higher learning. Now ten years later she serves the Kohala and Waimea communities as one of our many healthcare providers.

June 2023— Mahalo for your years of service Dr. Harper, enjoy retirement!

As one of our internist here at Hāmākua-Kohala Health for the past few years not to mention your time spent here before moving to Maui, know that your expertise, knowledge and sense of humor will be missed!

Dr. Irving Harper III retires from Hamakua-Kohala Health after years of providing health care at our Honokaa and Waimea clinic sites.

May 2023— Hamakua-Kohala Health to host first health fair event since 2019.

The Kick-Off to Summer Bash will be held on Saturday, May 6th at the Honokaa Gym Complex from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. It is an admission free event open to all! There will be over 20 informational vendors available including Hawaii Life Flight, Legal Aid Society, AlohaCare, HMSA, ‘Ohana Health Care, and United Health Care Quest. There will also be a keiki zone with face painting, jumping castle, and Keiki ID. Covid vaccination clinic will also be available for those looking to get their booster shot. November 2022— Hamakua-Kohala Health receives Community Partner Award  “Coalition for a Tobacco Free Hawaii Alakaʻi Award” 

Jen Valera & Kai Carvalho, Hāmākua-Kohala Health Staff Members received Outstanding Community Partner recognition in Tobacco Control by the Hawaii Public Health Institute. We would like to thank all the team members and partners that contribute into making these efforts and success possible.

November 2022 —Growing and accelerating in the Medical Field recognition.

Medical Assistant Naheana continues her education for higher learning towards her Licensed Practical Nurse certification. She has been recognized by the National Society of Leadership and Success with multiple certificates while on her journey.

What’s happening to the Old Honoka’a Infirmary now that it’s demolished? Sharon Cariaga-Alfonso, Business Development Director, shares insights for our future expansion of Hamakua-Kohala Health in Honoka’a.

Are you concerned about your blood pressure, or would you like to learn more about how to improve your blood pressure? One of our many healthier you programs offers Self-Measured Blood Pressure Monitoring. 

We have Ashley, Medical Assistant, demonstrating how to use the monitor correctly. At Hāmākua-Kohala Health, we teach our patients how to self-monitor their blood pressure daily at home or wherever. We provide clinical support, one on one counseling, and education.

Are you ready for a nutritional diet and a better you? Melody, our Care Coordinator, shares insights with one of our many healthier you programs. The VeggieRX, The Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program, helps our patients who may need support with nutritional education, diabetes, and hypertension, to name a few. The VeggieRX is a fantastic partnership with our local farmer’s market, where we get fresh fruits and produce. This tobacco treatment program will assist you with all the right tools to help you quit smoking. Anyone can participate, but you must be 18 years or older. We offer our patients free transportation. Do you need a ride to your appointment? One of the best things about Hamakua-Kohala Health is we offer our patients a free ride to their doctor’s appointments and pharmacy. If you live between Ninole, Kohala & Waikoloa areas, we will gladly pick you up and drop you off. Our patients enjoy this wonderful transportation service!
